The Tattoo Process

Electric tattoo machines are the traditional and most commonly used method that tattoos are applied today. A solid needle, powered by the machine, quickly injects ink into your skin between 50-3,000 times per minute. Your body’s immune system then goes into protection mode and attacks the invasive ink pigment with macrophages that try to remove the ink from your system by catching and consuming it. But some macrophages overeat and become so full of ink that they can’t move, keeping them where they are, and the massive amount of ink they consumed is visible through your skin as a tattoo. Though you see a tattoo through the outer layer of skin called the epidermis, ink is actually injected into the second layer of skin called the dermis. Cells in the dermis are more stable and will secure the ink in place for life.

How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work

Laser tattoo removal therapy works by targeting the ink in the dermis and breaking it down to be removed from your body. The most effective way to remove a tattoo is through the use of specially designed lasers that break up the ink particles with bursts of energy created through hyper focused light waves. Each different color of ink absorbs a different wavelength of light – when that light wave hits the ink, it shatters it into small pieces. Think about your ink pigments as large boulders – the laser tattoo removal process works to break those boulders into smaller and smaller pieces that your body’s immune system will now attack and help flush those macrophages out.

Is Laser Tattoo Removal Effective?

Whether you want to lighten an old tattoo to be covered with a new one or wish to get rid of a tattoo entirely, laser tattoo removal is an incredibly safe and effective process. Updated laser technology is much more progressive in comparison to older systems. Effectiveness and number of sessions usually correspond with some general aspects of the tattoo including colors, age, and location. Laser tattoo removal also offers less side effects than other alternative methods including dermabrasion or excision.

What Factors Affect Laser Tattoo Removal Success?

There are a few factors that will determine success and ease of removal. Although it takes multiple sessions to completely erase the tattoo, many people may see obvious results in the first session. Color is directly correlated to the number of sessions necessary. Lasers target single wavelengths at a time, using monochromatic wavelength energy to target that one ink color. Darker colors such as black and blue can absorb all wavelengths making it the easiest to lighten and remove. On the other hand, colors that are lighter will reflect the wavelength making it more difficult to remove, requiring more sessions to fade it each time. Age of a tattoo is also a factor, as tattoos fade over time, making aged pigments easier to remove. Location also plays a role in effectiveness. The closer the tattoo is to the heart, the faster it can be removed by laser. Parts of the body with higher blood amounts and greater lymph node count, such as the neck and face, are also easier to work with. The lower the tattoo on the body, the tougher it becomes to remove.

Do I Need Aftercare For Laser Tattoo Removal?

As with tattoo application, laser tattoo removal also requires a bit of aftercare to ensure optimal results, with many of the behaviors and tips being the same. It is most important to keep clean and sanitary conditions when addressing the area and keeping clean hands. Once the procedure has been completed, a dressing will be applied for protection and to encourage healing. Dressings should be changed and the area cleaned daily. The area should be kept moist with simple petroleum or triple antibiotic ointment and the bandage should not be too tight. Ice packs protected with a cloth may be applied as necessary to reduce soreness & swelling. Bleeding, bruising, blisters, scabbing and itching may take place but is expected. Picking, peeling or scratching is not advised though and can cause healing time to be longer. Direct sun, tanning beds, saunas, salt water, or chlorinated pools should be avoided for 2 to 4 weeks following your procedure.
